Why the Frasassi Caves are a good trip with kids

The Frasassi Caves are a large system of underground caverns at Genga, in the Marche hinterland, and a good trip for a rainy or very hot day: inside, the temperature is cool and constant all year. For children it is a little like a journey to another world, with huge halls, stalactites and stalagmites. Official information on visits, times and tickets is on the Frasassi Caves website.

How long it takes and what the route is like

According to family guides the visit is guided and lasts about an hour and a quarter, on a route of a little over a kilometre and a half, well equipped and with a non-slip floor. The duration is approximate: the real time is on the official website, where you can also check what the ticket includes.

What to wear: it is cooler than you think

Inside the caves the temperature is about 14 degrees all year round, even in summer: all the guides say so. Bring an extra layer for the children, closed shoes with a non-slip sole and, if needed, a light jacket. Outside, on the way out, it can be much hotter or colder: a change of T-shirt helps.

Booking and checking beforehand

Prices, times, opening days and rules for children change during the year. We do not write them here because only the official website is the right source: check them there and, if possible, book before you leave, especially on holidays and when the weather is bad, because many families choose the same plan.

How to organise the day

It is a car trip from Pesaro: work out the route with the navigation on the day, allowing for traffic and the time of your visit. If you leave in the morning you can plan the visit and a relaxed lunch; if you want a second stop, choose simple things so the children do not get tired. Another indoor idea near Fano is the Museo del Balì, while for rainy days in town there are more ideas in Pesaro with children on a rainy day. For another day trip see Gradara and Urbino from Pesaro.

Starting from Nuovo Fiore

The starting point is Nuovo Fiore, at Via Barignani 60, in Pesaro: the car stays in the apartment's private garage and on the way back, with tired children, you do not have to look for parking. Before you leave, check the visit time and the conditions on the caves' website.
