Cycling in Pesaro: Bicipolitana, seafront and Ciclovia Adriatica
Pesaro is one of Italy's most bike-friendly cities: it gave the name to the "bicipolitana", a cycle network that works like a colour-coded metro. If you stay at Nuovo Fiore (Via Barignani 60) there are free bikes in the apartment and the sea is 800 metres away.
The Pesaro Bicipolitana
The Bicipolitana is the city's cycle network: according to local press it has passed 100 kilometres, though figures vary between sources. The name was born in Pesaro, which is considered Italy's first "bicipolitana" (source: Il Post, in Italian). Lines are colour-coded like a metro, and one of them, the Linea Mare, runs along the coast.
From the historic centre you reach the seafront in a few minutes: Ponente beach is about 800 m from Nuovo Fiore and Levante beach about 900 m.
The seafront and the Ciclovia Adriatica
The Ciclovia Adriatica runs through Pesaro along the coast. To the south the seafront path links Pesaro to Fano (about 28 km according to a Komoot route); to the north the road climbs over Monte San Bartolo, a regional natural park, and reaches Gabicce via Fiorenzuola di Focara and Casteldimezzo, with many viewpoints over the sea. The northern Marche section between Fano and Gabicce is described by Italia.it. The San Bartolo climb is demanding: an e-bike helps if you are not trained.
Three easy rides from Nuovo Fiore
1) Centre and seafront: from the apartment to the beach and back, at an easy pace, with a stop on the sand. 2) Towards Fano on the coastal path: a day trip there and back if you are reasonably fit. 3) Towards San Bartolo and Gabicce: a scenic ride for trained cyclists or e-bikes, with a sunset over the sea.
Bikes, garage and safety
Nuovo Fiore provides free bikes and a private garage on site, handy for leaving the car too. Check brakes and tyres before you set off, wear a helmet where advised and follow the signed routes; in summer, ride early in the morning or late afternoon.
